End Factory Farming Print E-mail

End Factory Faming before it ends us!

Two new diseases, unheard of 10 years ago, are sweeping through the United Kingdom's pig farms, costing the industry up to 40 million pounds annually.

The two diseases cause acute wasting for which there is no known cure.

They are PMWS (post-weaning, multi-systemic wasting syndrome) and PDNS (porcine dermatitis nephropathy syndrome).  The diseases are thought to be spread by too early weaning, the overuse of antibiotics, bad hygiene and mixing pigs from different sources.  About 40% of the national herd in the UK is now infected, which is double the figure for a year ago.

Says Juliet Gallately of VIVA!, a prominent activist organization in the UK:
'As always, it is the animals who suffer the pain and distress of these illnesses but humans are also being threatened through deadly, antibiotic-resistant super bugs - also a product of these cruel farming systems.  We need to end factory farming before it ends us'.

Water Footprint

On World Water Day (22nd March) and on every other day, for that matter, we need to remember that meat-eating carries a giant water footprint.
Did you know? It takes 13 million litres of water to raise and convert one cow or ox into meat!
Did you know? To produce one portion of beef (250g) requires the same amount of drinking water that one person needs (at one litre a day) for 34 years of life!
