Update on the end-of-lay hens Print E-mail
A miserable end to a miserable life...

A big Thank You to all Animal Voice supporters who sent off our postcard petition to the four main supermarket chains, requesting that controls be put in place to prevent the suffering of end-of-lay hens at 'cull' depots throughout the country.

checkersAt the time of going to press, Shoprite/Checkers was the only supermarket chain to have responded. In a letter dated 25th May 2007, Marketing Director Brian Weyers said:

“With regard to the plight of end-of-lay hens that produced the eggs we sell to consumers, the Company would find it of concern if they are treated in the manner described in the April 2007 edition of Animal Voice.

While Shoprite has neither direct control over the decisions made by our egg suppliers about the disposal of end-of-lay hens, nor over how the unregulated informal trade treats live chickens, we have taken your request to heart. We are currently awaiting confirmation from our egg suppliers as to the existence of these so-called 'cull' depots, and also information about under whose authority or regulatory body they resort. I will follow up on my correspondence to you as soon as we have a clear picture of the situation.

“Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.”

Water Footprint

On World Water Day (22nd March) and on every other day, for that matter, we need to remember that meat-eating carries a giant water footprint.
Did you know? It takes 13 million litres of water to raise and convert one cow or ox into meat!
Did you know? To produce one portion of beef (250g) requires the same amount of drinking water that one person needs (at one litre a day) for 34 years of life!
