Water Stress Print E-mail

Excerpts from a fact sheet on desertification by the University of the Western Cape:

  • Overgrazing is the major cause of desertification worldwide
  • To halt desertification the number of animals on the land must be reduced, allowing plants to regrow.

(Unfortunately this report neglects to point out that reducing the consumption of meat is the most obvious remedy - Ed.)

A comparison of the water footprint of a person who includes meat in his/her diet to  that of a vegetarian shows that vegetarians use 777 000 litres per person per annum while meat-eating persons use 1,4 million litres per person per annum.

Water Footprint

On World Water Day (22nd March) and on every other day, for that matter, we need to remember that meat-eating carries a giant water footprint.
Did you know? It takes 13 million litres of water to raise and convert one cow or ox into meat!
Did you know? To produce one portion of beef (250g) requires the same amount of drinking water that one person needs (at one litre a day) for 34 years of life!
