Projects of the Humane Education Trust Print E-mail
    • Organising the 2003 "All Africa Humane Education Summit", which achieved high-level political support for humane education from national government and organisations such as UNESCO, NEPAD (New Partnership for Africa's Development), the Institute for Educational Development etc. - as well as providing NGOs and educators from throughout Africa with workshops, training and materials on humane education.
    • Educators and curriculum developers from 18 African countries attended the All-Africa Humane Education Summit (above) and HET's humane education materials are now in use in Swaziland and Mozambique (with whom HET now has close ties).
    • As a direct spin-off from the All-Africa Summit, a first-ever Animals in Islam conference was held in Cairo earlier this year.
    • Achieving official acceptance for humane education in the environmental programme of the revised national curriculum from 2004.
    • Achieving a wider understanding of humane education and its importance (away from 'animal care' towards the building of real and lasting empathy and compassion for animals) in a wider societal context, across all communities in South Africa.
    • Preparing and providing a full range of humane education materials, including workbooks, videos, books etc., backed up by teacher training and development support.

Water Footprint

On World Water Day (22nd March) and on every other day, for that matter, we need to remember that meat-eating carries a giant water footprint.
Did you know? It takes 13 million litres of water to raise and convert one cow or ox into meat!
Did you know? To produce one portion of beef (250g) requires the same amount of drinking water that one person needs (at one litre a day) for 34 years of life!
