Death on a Factory Farm Print E-mail

Dawnwatch has alerted Compassion in World Farming (South Africa) that  on March 16, HBO will premier a documentary called "Death on a Factory Farm" which follows an undercover investigation in the USA.

Time Magazine's web site is currently carrying a story on the documentary.

The HBO home page for the documentary.

We wish to thank Dawnwatch for this alert.

Compassion in World Farming (South Africa)'s Action Alerts over the last four months have revealed:

  • Unexplained bruises on broiler chickens Pigs trapped in sow stalls,
  • hidden away from sight on the Wine Route Male dairy calves discarded
  • and dying of hunger Routine debeaking of baby chicks Callous treatment
  • of the end-of-lay hens at 'cull' depots

We believe that for as long as farmed animals are hidden away from sight on the factory farms, brutal, callous and horrendous treatment of them will continue to occur.
We appeal to the supermarkets to help introduce a new dispensation for farmed animals by pro-actively supporting suppliers who, at the very least, practise free range and who encourage visitors to their farms.

Water Footprint

On World Water Day (22nd March) and on every other day, for that matter, we need to remember that meat-eating carries a giant water footprint.
Did you know? It takes 13 million litres of water to raise and convert one cow or ox into meat!
Did you know? To produce one portion of beef (250g) requires the same amount of drinking water that one person needs (at one litre a day) for 34 years of life!
