The High Price of Eggs in South Africa Print E-mail
Every year 26 million sick, dying and massively abused laying hens end up at ‘cull’ depots around South Africa. Compassion in World Farming (South Africa), which commissioned the video below, believes that the extremely inhumane treatment of chickens, constantly witnessed by children growing up in these disadvantaged environments, directly contributes to desensitization, anti-social behaviour, and violence later in their lives.
Our treatment of chickens is unconscionable and shocking and our children are robbed of their constitutional right to human dignity by being exposed to a system that condones such behaviour.

The Meaty Truth - Deconstructing The Myths of Eating Animals Print E-mail
July 2011 - freefromharm.org

Many common myths about our diet still persist today: We are at the top of the food chain. Eating meat is part of the circle of life. We have the anatomical features of other predatorial animals. We are by nature predators and hunters. We have dominion over all other life. They have become deeply embedded in our collective consciousness. But is there really any factual, scientific or even religious basis to these widely held beliefs?

Harvard social psychologist Melanie Joy brings her theory of carnism out of academia and into popular culture with her acclaimed book, “Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism.” Once I picked up this book, I just could not put it down. I read through it in just a few hours and then went straight to Joy’s web site, carnism.com, eager to learn more!

South Africans are joining hands against factory farming Print E-mail
Mantsadi Molotlegi presents two good reasons, among many others, as to why South Africans are joining hands against factory farming in a mass Class Action to the newly-formed Consumer Commission. Every year, 23 million female chicks destined for the egg laying industry, are subjected to this torture in South Africa. Recourse to the Consumer Commission is now available to consumers who find production methods to be "unconscionable".

Water Footprint

On World Water Day (22nd March) and on every other day, for that matter, we need to remember that meat-eating carries a giant water footprint.
Did you know? It takes 13 million litres of water to raise and convert one cow or ox into meat!
Did you know? To produce one portion of beef (250g) requires the same amount of drinking water that one person needs (at one litre a day) for 34 years of life!
