The High Price of Eggs in South Africa
Every year 26 million sick, dying and massively abused laying hens end up at ‘cull’ depots around South Africa. Compassion in World Farming (South Africa), which commissioned the video below, believes that the extremely inhumane treatment of chickens, constantly witnessed by children growing up in these disadvantaged environments, directly contributes to desensitization, anti-social behaviour, and violence later in their lives.
Our treatment of chickens is unconscionable and shocking and our children are robbed of their constitutional right to human dignity by being exposed to a system that condones such behaviour.
On World Water Day (22nd March) and on every other day, for that matter, we need to remember that meat-eating carries a giant water footprint. Did you know? It takes 13 million litres of water to raise and convert one cow or ox into meat! Did you know? To produce one portion of beef (250g) requires the same amount of drinking water that one person needs (at one litre a day) for 34 years of life!
